Water Safety

Last week or two weeks ago,  for my inquiry I made a DLO about water safety. This has stuff like why we need to know how to swim, how we might explain swimming to a little child, and lots more. This is my prior knowledge I have about water safety.

E - Ako maths multiplication and division

Today for maths I did E-ako maths, multiplication and division. In this task, a girl called Eva is playing Old Maid. She only has twenty cards, so we subtracted, added, and shared the cards to make equal groups, which was the main idea of this task.

Finding China

Today my reading group (Pukeko) and I read a story called " Finding China". It was about a girl who was half Chinese that lived in Dunedin. Her dads friend gave an idea that she should go to school in Shanghi, so when she was 11 years old, she flew by herself all the way to China, Shanghi. She then started a boarding school called Ping He Bilingual school. After we read the story our group went to a table and graphed the similarity's and differences between Ping-He school and our school (Panmure Bridge School). This is all our synthesized knowledge we came up with.

About Informational Reports

For the past week we have been making a DLO about how to write a Informational Report. This DLO has the structure of a DLO, how to edit your report, and other words to help make your sentence starters more interesting.

My teachers tweets

This task was about Mrs Anderson's tweets. We had to fix them before she sent them out into the world and into the classroom. We looked through them and it sounded terrible. For example her tweet was"Don't wear white people I can guarantee you will get a stain." We fixed it up and added a comma that sounded like this "Don't wear white, people. I can Guarantee you will get a stain!". This was suppose to help others know when and how to use a comma.

Language Challenge

For inquiry this morning, my buddy Nazanin and I made a Chinese mandarin DLO. On this DLO it shows how to speak basic Chinese mandarin ( hello, goodbye, and thank you ). We also have a link to a website and an expert saying these greetings and other words.  In the top right corner we also have the Chinese flag.

Chinese population

This reading DLO I have made is about a journal we read about the Chinese population called " Millions and millions of people". Chinese have the rule that every couple is only allowed 1 child. We also took a look at the Chinese family tree and what they looked like. In this slide is also my knowledge that I synthesized about this story. Synthesize means taking the knowledge you already know about something, finding our some new knowledge about that, and then looking at it in a different way to form a new understanding.

About Informational Reports

This week in Ms Donaldson's writing group we had to make a DLO (Digital, Learning, Object) about Informational reports and a few tips and tricks to write them. In this DLO you will find the structure (the way it is written), the language features (what words you use in an informational report, and how the structure is laid out.

Doubling and halving

This is another maths DLO I have made to work out times tables like these. We were learning to use doubling and halving to solve multiplication problems. This trick can help you solve any equation.

Commas

This is a DLO that my group ( Sajiha, Zeba, Mahdia, Zahra, Nazella ) and I made. This DLO shows how to use , when to use, and why to use a comma. Commas helps a lot with your punctuation, without them, whatever you write will not make sense to the reader.

Shoe narrative

Waiting, Waiting , Waiting  I could hear a noise. It grabbed my shoe box straight away. As the lid uncovered, I could see Haylie filled with joy in her eyes. She took me out and tried me on. I was perfect. From that day onwards, we walked, sprinted, and skipped everywhere together. She was the best owner ever. She even cleaned me after I got dirty. At school, I remember climbing on top of a ladder and seeing all the other shoes down below. I finally made my first friend but made a bad impression by getting my arms caught on the fence. It did not feel nice at all. I introduced myself and she said her name was Nike lefty and Nike Righty it was pretty weird at first but became really good friends. After school,  Haylie and I would walk through the wet damp grass, which was a hassle, especially getting green things stuck on the sides. She cleaned me of course, but threw me in the closet like I was a rag doll. That was the only thing I hated about her.  The next day she just put me on but I was smelly, disgusting and all sorts of things. Sometimes, we would walk on the beach with her dog Spot.  That was the worst experience  of my shoe life. Her dog was my arch enemy. I never liked him because once he chewed me up like a disgusting dog toy. Haylie washed me immediately.

By Mia and Charlize.

Today we wrote a narrative about some black shaggy, lifeless shoes. Our narrative was based on the shoes life before it became lifeless and raggedy. We gave the shoes human qualities, like sense of smell, sight, and so on. Our teacher got us to make a plan of what we might add into the story, like how will it start and how it's life will happen. After our plan, we were timed to write as much as we can for 15 minutes, which is why we didn't get to end our story.

Anne Frank

This DLO for home learning was about a brave girl named Anne Frank. She is very popular for her diary that she wrote long long ago. If you would like to find out more, click on this DLO Fifita, Silivia, and I made.

Charlotte Anne

Today for reading we have watched a video about Charlotte Anne. She was a farmer in the 1870's, but back then women didn't have the same rights as men did. Charlotte is very special because her braveness and confidence has proved that women can do much more. To learn more about Charlotte Anne, click on the slide presented above.

Giant Pandas

For reading today we have researched about Giant Pandas. But in this DLO we have been synthesizing. Before we researched about the Giant Panda, we brainstormed about stuff we already knew about Giant Pandas ( Prior Knowledge ).  Next we researched about Giant Pandas on our devices and found out more about them ( New knowledge ). Lastly we thought about all our knowledge we have now and formed a new understanding about pandas ( synthesized knowledge ).

Language Challenge

This week for inquiry in Thailand we have been doing the Language challenge. We did a few greeting in Thai for you and translated the Thai words into English (well, off the internet). We also have a website that you can go on of a expert that can teach you Thai too. If it does not work, you can click here.

Thailand Food Challenge

This week for Thailand/Inquiry we have doing the food challenge. Ms Donaldson showed us what we had to do and then we started creating this DLO ( Digital Learning Object). One of the facts I found about Thai food is that rice is REALLY special to them. They have a rice god they believe in, and if someone steps on rice or throws rice away, they are disrespecting their rice god.

E-ako maths 3

Today I have finished up to here on my E-ako maths. In these questions, like last time, we have been ticking the statements that are true about this spelling list. I have been getting a few of these wrong but then eventually getting them right.

Synthesizing: Gorillas

Today we have been learning how to synthesizing about Gorillas. Our teacher gave us a chocolate bar rapper that is sold in America. On the outside it says that every chocolate that gets sold, 10% of the money goes to the endangered species. On of the endangered species are the Gorilla. Before we read the rapper, my partner Fafita and I wrote in the centre of the paper (above) all the things that we already knew about Gorillas. After we read the chocolate rapper, we wrote all the new knowledge we gained on the next layer of the circle. Lastly, on the outside of the circle, we wrote our new opinion that we synthesized on Gorillas.

The map challenge

This is an activity I have been doing called "The map challenge" I have done for my inquiry. We had to follow the instructions above and mark the places the instructions told us to mark, then mark them on the map. The orange line across the map represents the equator, which is the centre of the earth. We have marked the countries that boarder Thailand, the seas near Thailand, and so on.

Kyle Mewburn

Today we have had a author visit our school today called Kyle Mewburn. I have made a DLO about this author that explains himself and his books. His best selling books were "Old Hu Hu" and "Dragon night: fire". He seemed like a very funny and energetic person when he came to our school and told his fascinating stories. I have read quite a few of his stories. What I like about his books is the pace he uses in his writing and the language features he adds in his story.

E-ako maths: fives and tens

Today I have done my e-ako maths again. In this task I have been learning about skip counting in 5's and how to figure out how to use it in questions like these. This is the part I got up to. At this part I had to tick the statements that were true about this spelling list.

William Henry Fox Talbot

This was our first DLO about home learning for Term 2. This term we are researching about people this time. Our first person today was about Henry Fox Talbot. He invented salted paper and the calotype. If you want to read more, read this slide or the references we  put on the 5th slide.

Thailand facts

This week I have been learning about this place for my inquiry with Mrs. Donaldson. I have made a DLO that contains facts about Thailand. On the map I have marked how many kilometres there is from Thailand to New Zealand. These are just interesting facts that I found really amazing.

E-ako maths

Today for maths I have been doing e-ako maths. This task was about fractions and place value. In this task above I had to click on the statements that were true about this graph above. I got this wrong the first time, but then figured it out the second time. I recommend you trying this website for your maths too.

Synthesizing

Our learning intention today for reading was to understand what synthesizing is. Synthesizing is when you take the knowledge you know about something or someone and then use the knowledge we found out to look at them a different way and have a new opinion about them. We did an activity where we made a biopic poster of a famous person. We used our knowledge that we knew about this person and what we found out to chose backgrounds, poses, symbols and other stuff that we thought represented him and his achievements. The famous person I chose was Martin Luther King. I made the poster like this because he changed the world with his speech "I have a dream".

Sub words

Today we have been researching words that start with "sub". Sub means under or below. When we researched our words, we put them on our word wall with the meaning beneath the word. After that we made a paragraph using 8 of these "sub" words.

Maths strategy for 6, 7 and 8 times table

Our learning intention yesterday and today was how to use the 5 times tables to work out the 6,7, and 8 times tables. We learnt this trick yesterday with our maths teacher. I didn't get it at first but then later it started to get easier.Remember this works only with the 6, 7, and 8 times table as I showed on my DLO that I made.
