Reply to Term 1 Charlize

Dear Term 1 Me…

I read your letter to me about all the goals I had to achieve, and I am pleased to tell you I have improved very well. I remembered when we did the tests at the beginning of the year, and worked on what I needed to practise on, especially my maths. I was so close to stage 8 in maths, but got stage 7 instead. But hopefully I will be at stage 8 at the beginning of High School. I also read that you wanted me to improve in my writing, I’m getting there (sorry) but at least my narratives and recounts are better that my writing.
But now let’s break away from my school subjects, I have been very focused on my work and my blog posts, I’ve got now over 185 bog posts! Isn’t that amazing? I also practised my social skills (working collaboratively with my classmates, listening to the teacher, giving things a go) which has been going very well. I even made a small, but great group of friends. 2016 has been very busy (especially in Term 3) but like you said, all the hard work would be worth it at the end. It has been such a great year with the help of my teachers and classmates. So I can gladly tell you my year at Panmure Bridge School has been a big part of my life, and will also be a year I will never forget.

This is my reply to Term 1 me from the letter I made at the beginning of this year. You can fin the letter I wrote before here.
In the letter Term 1 me wrote had all the goals I needed to achieve at the end of this year. Above is a picture of me in term 1 and a picture of me in term 4.

Destroy the Ghost

Today me and my buddy Afu played a typing game which helps you type faster. All you have to do is type in the words that is closest to your screen and when you have finished typing in your word, you press enter and you will either kill the ghost or the ghost will scratch you and you will lose 1 life. My highest score was 4450, but Afu's score was higher.

Hyperbole - what is it?

Yesterday and today for writing we have been looking at the word Hyperbole. On this DLO it talks about what the word means, how this word and it's ability's can enhance your writing, and a brief explanation of my work.

Narrative Quick Writes

Today my buddies Jorja, SaKae, and I made a six sentence narrative story. We each chose a picture from our reading tumble which we wanted to write our six sentence narrative about. But each sentence had a different purpose. The first sentence had to say who the story was about. The second sentence described where they lived. Then the third then talked about a special talent that person had. later the fourth sentence talked about the problem. The fifth one then talked about why she felt that way. And finally, the last sentence says how they solved the problem. We did this narrative exercise so we can re-vision how narrative stories are written.

My Porquoi Story

Today I have finally finished my porqoui story. What is a porqoui story you ask? Well, porqoui means 'why' in French, so basically it's a story that tells why or how something has happened. Still don't know? Think about cultural legends that people tell, like Maui and the Sun. That is a porqoui story because it tells how Maui slowed the sun so that we now have time in the day to do  all our stuff. Anyway, this made up porqoui story I wrote was about how Kailao came to Tonga. A week later my teacher told us to work with a critical friend (my critical friend was Mia). On the sides of my story she made comments of where my mistakes were in my writing. I eventually fixed them, and later read her story. An acronym that helped us was DRAFT (Delete, Rearrange, Add, Fix, and Talk). DRAFT (as shown above) helps us proof read ours and other peoples work. The reason why I chose to write about how Kailao came to life was because two ago it was Tongan language week, so this was a way of acknowledging that week.

Sketching-note

Questions

This week and last week we have been learning about sketch note. Sketch note is taking notes, but instead of doing loads and loads of paragraphs, you also use pictures, CAPITALS and arrows and so much more. Sketch notes don't have to be perfect, they just have to be there on your paper. Being able to draw pictures helps me make better connections to the topic. And your sketch notes don't have to make sense to anyone but yourself. Our topics we have made sketch notes on were about Questions, Athletic skills, and Rio Olympics 2016. I find sketch note very helpful because of these various reasons.

My Magic Box

This week we have been reading this poem called The Magic Box. Our teacher then told us to make a poem like The Magic Box, but to make it our own. So this is what I came up with. Hope you like it.

Olympic spirit

Yesterday we did current events. Our current event was about how two of these ladies helped each other throughout the running race at the Olympics. They both showed fair play which is what the Olympics are all about.

Olympic venues then and now

We have been learning to consider both sides of a provocation so that we can make an informed opinion. Mrs Anderson asked us to think about if host countries should spend so much money on the Olympics. To make our informed opinions we had to search up different opinions on this question, one person saying yes and one person saying no. After searching for these opinions, we had to read these comments to form our own opinions on this question.  The pictures at the bottom of my DLO are the comparisons of the aquatic Olympic venue in Beijing 2008 on the left and what it looks like now on the right.

Hover Bike Advertisment

These past weeks we have been learning about advertising and what persuasive languages they use. In this advertisement my partners and I made, we used rhetorical questions, appealing words, low prices, and the group three rule.

advertising and their language features

Today our teacher gave us a task to explain what advertising is, their purpose, and what language features they used. As a group, we read and searched up what advertising was. But first our teacher gave us a dictation challenge. We were given a piece of paper to stick on the window. Then when the teacher said 'Go', one person had to read the paper, the other person had to tell the writer what the words were, and lastly the writer had to write as quick as possible. Later on our teacher gave us another challenge which was to write down what advertising meant, it's  purpose, and what language features they use (as seen above).

Washington and Jim

Today we went on this website called Story Starters. You first go on scrambler, where you type your name and writing level. Then the scrambler gives you a topic to write about for your story. Then it will ask what you would want to write on (newspaper, notebook, postcard, letter). When you have chosen one, you start writing your story and drawing you picture. My story was on about a depressed president who rode a sloth to work. The point of us doing this activity was to practice our writing.

Speeches

Today we went in our thinking groups and read out our speeches. We all read our speeches while John was timing us. Our speech had to be between 2 mins 30 sec and 3 mins. The people in my thinking group were Silivia, Jane, Victoria, and John. After each speech was said, we had a rubric to fill in about each persons speech. Here is my speech I read.

  1. Talofa, o lo’u igoa o Charlize.
Think about something that has really inspired you? It might have been something you watched, or something you read. Well, you want to know what you should read, scriptures. One thing my group said I needed to focus on was having a clear voice

2) You’ve probably heard of this before. But  if you’ve read them or not, religious or not, it doesn’t matter. Even  just trying to read at least 1, in your whole life, is something you need. And trust me, you need to. All the scriptures in the bible are full of great advice, stories, tips, and inspiration. Maybe reading your own book from your culture would be better.  Scriptures to most people, is the most important thing in their life. While to others, it is just another book.

3)      But did you know the Bible is one of the most best selling book in the world? One of the possible reasons why is because it has helped loads of people around the world with their problems and lives, especially non believers.  I have read a short story about a person who lived inside a rough neighborhood in Miami. He had a big fear of dying because he didn’t want to stop existing in this world, and that people would forget about him.

4)   A  problem that I found out is that even people that go to church don’t read the bible a lot of the time.  Even though It wouldn’t seem like a big problem, it is definitely not a small problem. Can you imagine that? I find this very disappointing. But in my point of view, I think this can change. At the same time I know that not everyone in the world can get access to the bible, for different reasons. But I think if everyone could take some time to have a look inside the bible, you might just find what you’re looking for. He was invited to a few churches through friends and family, but their beliefs didn’t stick with him. But when he finally discovered scriptures, and started studying on it. Later as he got older, he wasn’t scared anymore. Can you see how the scriptures changed his perspective on death?

5)   No, this is not a huge world crisis, but I just think reading a scripture could really be helpful in everybody’s  life. I am not trying to make this book more popular, but I just want to show that this book is very special, motivational, and truthful book.  Would you read a scripture?

Are UFO's Real??

A few weeks ago we have been writing informational reports. This informational report me and my buddy Silivia did was about if UFO's are actually real. We used videos, articles, and where they live as evidence they are real.

About Informational Reports

For the past week we have been making a DLO about how to write a Informational Report. This DLO has the structure of a DLO, how to edit your report, and other words to help make your sentence starters more interesting.

My teachers tweets

This task was about Mrs Anderson's tweets. We had to fix them before she sent them out into the world and into the classroom. We looked through them and it sounded terrible. For example her tweet was"Don't wear white people I can guarantee you will get a stain." We fixed it up and added a comma that sounded like this "Don't wear white, people. I can Guarantee you will get a stain!". This was suppose to help others know when and how to use a comma.

About Informational Reports

This week in Ms Donaldson's writing group we had to make a DLO (Digital, Learning, Object) about Informational reports and a few tips and tricks to write them. In this DLO you will find the structure (the way it is written), the language features (what words you use in an informational report, and how the structure is laid out.

Commas

This is a DLO that my group ( Sajiha, Zeba, Mahdia, Zahra, Nazella ) and I made. This DLO shows how to use , when to use, and why to use a comma. Commas helps a lot with your punctuation, without them, whatever you write will not make sense to the reader.

Shoe narrative

Waiting, Waiting , Waiting  I could hear a noise. It grabbed my shoe box straight away. As the lid uncovered, I could see Haylie filled with joy in her eyes. She took me out and tried me on. I was perfect. From that day onwards, we walked, sprinted, and skipped everywhere together. She was the best owner ever. She even cleaned me after I got dirty. At school, I remember climbing on top of a ladder and seeing all the other shoes down below. I finally made my first friend but made a bad impression by getting my arms caught on the fence. It did not feel nice at all. I introduced myself and she said her name was Nike lefty and Nike Righty it was pretty weird at first but became really good friends. After school,  Haylie and I would walk through the wet damp grass, which was a hassle, especially getting green things stuck on the sides. She cleaned me of course, but threw me in the closet like I was a rag doll. That was the only thing I hated about her.  The next day she just put me on but I was smelly, disgusting and all sorts of things. Sometimes, we would walk on the beach with her dog Spot.  That was the worst experience  of my shoe life. Her dog was my arch enemy. I never liked him because once he chewed me up like a disgusting dog toy. Haylie washed me immediately.

By Mia and Charlize.

Today we wrote a narrative about some black shaggy, lifeless shoes. Our narrative was based on the shoes life before it became lifeless and raggedy. We gave the shoes human qualities, like sense of smell, sight, and so on. Our teacher got us to make a plan of what we might add into the story, like how will it start and how it's life will happen. After our plan, we were timed to write as much as we can for 15 minutes, which is why we didn't get to end our story.

Sub words

Today we have been researching words that start with "sub". Sub means under or below. When we researched our words, we put them on our word wall with the meaning beneath the word. After that we made a paragraph using 8 of these "sub" words.
