Blog commenting - LS2

Today for blogging blitz I went on my friend, Jorja's blog and commented on her blog posts she did in October. Sa Kae is my next person I am going to do. One of Jorja's blog posts that I really liked was her DLO on how birds fly. I thought it was really fascinating how birds use the wind to fly.

Researching Tips

Last week we had a session with our teacher by the name of Mrs. Oglivie. She taught us how to research thing by no using full sentences like "Who was the best European football player in 2006?" because Google (or whatever you use) searches each word individually, and do you know how many times people type in the words "what" and "how". So, this slide might be for you. We had a lot of fun learning these skills and teaching them to the year 7's in our class.

Problems on the way to School

Yesterday and today we have been solving multiplication problems on the way to school ( not in REAL life but it said in a book). Our learning intention was solving multiplication problems in everyday contexts. We had to read word problems like the one above and find out what the equation was inside that word problem.  For example, some of them might has a multiplication equation or a division question.

Rugby Training with Trevour

Today for kiwi sport, all the year 7's and 8's had a session with Trevour and Mr. M for touch. First we did a warm up which was just running, jogging, high knees, and butt kicking. After that we practised making tries with the rugby ball while with a partner. One of the favourite activities I really liked doing was when we played Rats n' Rabbits and when we had to jump to our partner, and when we were close enough, we had to give our buddy a double high five and shout 'TOUCH!'. The whole class enjoyed all the activities and was really puffed out afterwards.

Rockets and Newton's laws

For inquiry we were talking about how rockets work. We also learnt about Newton's 3 laws. One of the things we talked about was how the gas inside the engine comes out of the exhaust and thrust the rocket out into space. In this DLO we also stated 3 facts about rockets and introduced a joke, it goes like this:
Me: Finish this sentence, may the force...
You: Be with you?
Me: Nope, may the force be mass times acceleration

Smart Searching Skills

Today the year 8's and I went over to our school library to have a lesson on smart searching skills with Mrs. Ogilivie. She gave us tips and tricks to help us with our researching, like for example using key words. Instead of typing in 'Who are the best netball players in Ireland?', type in this 'netball ireland players best'. It may not make sense but google searches up each word individually. Also, making all your words lowercase also brings more better websites. A while after we were shown how to do the C.R.A.P test on websites and how to use Kids InfoBits and Britannica School, I showed my buddy SaKae the two websites we were introduced. She learnt quite a bit and may use these websites for her homework.

Reading Challenge

Last week, Mrs Anderson put us into reading groups. Next our teacher gave us different challenges we had to complete. Our first challenge was to explain what our story we read was about in 25 words. While Challenge 2  and three was where we read a story and had to fill in the missing words. The story we had to fill the words in for were called Tickling fish, The story of Opo, and Fish. Now today we have just marked our stories. Our learning intention was to follow instructions and making sure we had to read for understanding and meaning. We also practised a skill called Skimming n' Scanning. You use this technique when reading a text or a page of a book or something. Skimming is like a plane, it goes over something once quite quickly. Scanning is like a helicopter, it finds what it is looking for and then hovers over until the info is found.

Rhythm interactive

Well, today was a very musical day, especially with drums! We had Lucy and Jonny teach us how to play the drums. He was also talking about how actions are more powerful than words. That's why for the first bit our visitors didn't speak, they just showed us how to play our drum. I really enjoyed this moment because you get to learn different notes for the drums.

How Does Water Help Us

Today for inquiry Afu, Mahdia, Jessie, and I have been learning about how our school is becoming a water only school. Above on our DLO we have the differences between hydration and dehydration, how water helps us, and why drinking water in schools is important. Did you know that drinking an energy drink is the same as eating 12 chocolate chip biscuits?

The Forces of Flight

Today for inquiry we learnt about the physics of flight. This is my DLO I have made on flight. Lift and thrust is what makes the plane go up and drag plus weight keeps the plane down. Gravity also keeps the plane from coming off the face of the earth. Like if a planes engine stopped working, it wouldn't float to the left or the right, it would crash straight into the ground. That it because gravity pulls thing to the earth. We also learnt Newton's first law ( which is on my DLO too ).
